I always enjoy reading whatever my foodie pal Winnie has posted on her blog, Healthy Green Kitchen. Her beautiful bacon, chard and walnut tart caught my eye some time ago and, although it has taken me ages to finally try it, it was well worth the wait.
To tell the truth, I can’t remember ever cooking with Swiss chard, although I love dark, leafy greens of all kinds. Crusts are always a challenge for me, but Winnie walked me through the steps in her carefully written recipe. My husband, Larry, seemed drawn into the kitchen and said, “I smell walnuts…and I’m hungry.”
Yes, it was a bit off our healthy-heart diet to add all those eggs but I remember Larry being served an egg, yolk and all, every morning he was in the cardiac unit after his heart attack. The cream and the bacon were the real splurges here and well worth it. TIP: Add some kosher salt and ground white pepper when you whisk together the egg-cream-syrup mixture.
Thanks, Winnie, for a lovely recipe. I know that this was in the running for an appearance on the Martha Stewart show. Boy, Martha missed out here. This recipe has Martha written all over it. No, it has Winnie written all over it…
The tart looks beautiful Liz! Thanks for making my recipe xoxo
You are such an inspiration to me, Winnie!
I agree that this recipe sounds wonderful. I haven’t tried it yet, but now I will. It will be perfect for this weekend, perhaps with kale instead of the chard.
Kale – a terrific idea…
This sounds gorgeous. I recently made a chard, sausage and pine nut tart that was killer…these guys could be cousins! – S
It’s an honor to be related…
This tart seems so seasonal and I am in the mood for fall. GREG
Me too, definitely ready for fall and cooler weather entreés…
I think I’ll try kale as well. We are having a daily love affair, kale and me!
Have you tried kale chips yet? Delicious – my husband calls them my “green potato chips”.
I have – but not homemade ones. Do you have a recipe you have posted?
