Kauai: A Visit to the Garden Island

Aloha!

One of the highlights of summer was a quick get-away to Kauai for four glorious days. I traveled with my dear friend, Laurie, who orchestrated the entire trip! We endured the five and a half hour flight from LAX and emerged into beautiful sunshine and sweet-smelling air once we landed in Lihue and jumped into our rental car.

Dumping our bags at the hotel, we headed for the first of as many beaches as we could cram into our short stay.

Our home base was in Kapaa and we made two visits to the Zagat-rated Lemongrass Grill & Seafood Restaurant on the Kuhio Highway. The mango mai tais were worth the plane ride, and the grilled Ahi with passion fruit aioli was superb.

A bit farther north we found our favorite breakfast spot, the Ono Family Restaurant. I can still taste the French toast with fresh strawberries and the homemade coconut syrup. One afternoon, we happily stood in line for the largest “shave ice” I have ever enjoyed.

Brief rainstorms became a part of every day (and night), giving us an opportunity to do a little shopping between beach breaks. We were delighted to see pineapples, coconuts and bananas growing in such profusion.

Hungry for tropical fruit, we scored big time at the Kapaa Farmers Market! The passion fruit and papayas were delicious, but the fresh lychees were our favorite.

A drive up north to Hanalei and its gorgeous horse-shoe beach was incredibly scenic, as we drove through taro fields, waterfalls and gazed up at the green peaks surrounded by mist.

Generous slatherings of sun-block sent us home with the beginning of a summer tan, as well as happy memories of a lovely visit to The Garden Island. Mahalo to the friendly folks who so kindly welcomed us.
